Report: Dwight Howard to Opt Out, Become Unrestricted Free Agent

By Taylor Pate on June 21, 2016

According The Vertical, sources indicate that Dwight Howard will inform the Houston Rockets that he will decline the final year of his contract, making him an unrestricted free agent.

As the tweet indicates, Howard was set to make $23.2 million in the upcoming season. The decision will effectively end the former All-Star center's time as a member of the Houston Rockets and will leave the team with approximately $46 million in cap space.

Howard played in 183 regular season games over a three year stint, averaging 16 points, 11.7 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game. In 28 playoff games, Howard put up 17.9 points, 13.9 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks per game.

Early rumors indicate that the Golden State Warriors may be interested in signing Howard, though there are few reputable sources to confirm this.
