It looked as if the Rockets coaching search had been all but wrapped up on Thursday morning when all signs pointed towards former Suns, Knicks, and Lakers head coach Mike D'Antoni being the reported 'frontrunner'.
However, now it seems the team is taking a step back and taking a step back and reevaluating its' options starting with Charlotte Hornets assistant coach Stephen Silas.
On Friday, Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle reported that along with Mike D'Antoni, Stephen Silas was being seriously considered for the head coaching vacancy.
Silas would be bringing in former Nets and Grizzlies head coach Lionel Hollins to be his associate head coach just as D'Antoni would be bringing in Toronto Raptors' assistant Rex Kalamian as his.In addition to Mike D'Antoni, Rockets seriously weighing Stephen Silas as coach with Lionel Hollins as his top assistant, source said.— Jonathan Feigen (@Jonathan_Feigen) May 20, 2016
Silas has 16 years of assistant coaching experience in the NBA and has been long regarded as one of the NBA's "next head coaches". He's the son of NBA player and coach Paul Silas, he double majored in sociology and management at Brown University, and spent time scouting college for his father in Charlotte and Cleveland. He has close with players around the league like Jeremy Lin who credits him for a lot of his success and he's very good at developing relationships with players.
He's an outside-the-box thinker and he spent the last five years in Charlotte - the last two under head coach Steve Clifford who made a dark-horse run at the Coach of the Year award. This all does wonders for his credibility. The man has paid his dues, he's qualified, and he's ready to take the next step.
Ultimately the final call on this decision will be made my owner Leslie Alexander so it's anybody's guess what he's looking for in a candidate.
