Just days after being seemingly moments away from getting a deal worked out with former Suns head coach Mike D'Antoni, the Rockets have decided to continue interviewing candidates for their vacancy.
On Saturday, Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle confirmed that the Rockets were to interview James Borrego and Adrian Griffin for the head coaching position.
James Borrego served on the Spurs coaching Staff from 2003-2010 before serving a brief two year stint in New Orleans and a three year stint in Orlando and eventually coming back to join the Spurs' assistant staff last year.Rockets next round of interviews will include Adrian Griffin and James Borrego on Monday in Houston, sources confirmed.— Jonathan Feigen (@Jonathan_Feigen) May 21, 2016
Adrian Griffin served as an assistant under Scott Skiles in Milwaukee for two years before joining Tom Thibodeau's staff in Chicago for five years and recently served as an assistant on staff for Orlando last year. This was before Scott Skiles resigned so Griffin's future is pretty murky right now which would explain his interest in interviewing with Houston.
Even if the Rockets don't end up hiring any of these candidates, it never hurts to interview them. You grow connections, learn a lot about your team, and for all we know, these assistants could still end up on the staffs of either Mike D'Antoni or Stephen Silas - the current frontrunners for the job.
