Yes, we once again had to wait for the NBA Awards to be announced two months after the season's conclusion. But through the long waiting period, we finally arrived to Monday night and saw two Rockets take home an NBA Award.
Eric Gordon and Mike D'Antoni were unable to repeat as award winners. Lou Williams took home Sixth Man of the Year, and Dwane Casey won Coach of the Year (we're still confused).
Clint Capela was a finalist for an award for the first time in his career. He lost out on the Most Improved Player Award to Victor Oladipo. Capela will probably be just fine considering the hefty contract he is likely to receive next month, hopefully with the Rockets.
Daryl Morey won Executive of the Year Award for the very first time in his career. The acquisition of Chris Paul plus signings of P.J. Tucker and Luc Mbah a Moute were big factors in the Rockets having the winningest season in franchise history (65). What stands out with Morey is him always looking to improve. It is rare for Morey to stay quiet during trade deadlines and off-seasons. Even if no moves are made, he will still have involvement. Morey is chomping at the bit to form a championship team in Houston. The Rockets were one game away from the NBA Finals this past season, so he seems to have the formula together.
James Harden is finally an MVP. Third times the charm, right? Harden finished 2nd in 2015 to Steph Curry and 2nd again in 2017 to Russell Westbrook. Many have advocated for Harden to have at least one MVP under his belt by now. While he had strong cases both years, it just was not his time yet. That is not the case anymore. Harden finally has an award he craved and multiple Rockets teammates were in attendance at the award show to show support.
It is a special moment for Harden and Rockets fans. Harden was traded to the organization in 2012 and has led them to the postseason every year since, including two Western Conference Finals appearances. If Chris Paul does not injure his hamstring, Harden could have a ring to his name right now as well. It's always been 2nd place for Harden during his time in Houston. He can finally have his moment tonight as he joins a list of historically great players to win the MVP.
