Marc Stein of ESPN recently reported that the Rockets are hopeful that Sergio Llull will join the team next season. Llull was drafted 34th overall in the 2007 draft. by the Denver Nuggets. The Rockets would then buy his draft rights for $2.25 million. Since he was drafted in 2007, he has decided to stay in Spain and play overseas. He is currently signed to Real Madrid.

It has been noted that the Rockets are very high on Llull’s ability to produce in the NBA. Last season, he averaged 12.8 PPG and 4.6 APG for Real Madrid. The 12.8 PPG was actually a career high for Llull. Against the Oklahoma City Thunder yesterday, Llull had 22 points, 4 rebounds and 9 assists, including five three-pointers. But unfortunately for the Rockets, nothing has convinced him to come to the states yet and be in the NBA.
For the past few seasons, one of the biggest weaknesses for the Rockets has been the point guard position. While Patrick Beverley has done a nice job as the starter, the team has desperately needed another primary ball-handler to help take the offensive load off of James Harden. They were able to acquire one when they signed Eric Gordon. But if they are able to convince LLull to join the team, it will then make life a lot easier for everyone. He will not be the starter, but he will certainly see consistent minutes and have a big role in the rotation. It is never a bad thing to have too many playmakers. Him and Gordon could both help run the second unit. Llull is also a solid three-point shooter, shooting 35% last season.
It is still up in the air whether Llull will ultimately decide to join the Rockets next season. But if Daryl Morey and the rest of the front office are pushing for him to join the team, it is obvious that he could help the team immediately.
