Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical reported earlier today that small forward P.J. Hairston has agreed to a deal with the Houston Rockets. The deal will be under a non-guaranteed contract. Hairston will be with the Rockets at training camp and fight for one of the final roster spots. If he does not make the cut, he will be sent to the D-League. The Rockets also have Hairston’s D-League rights.

Hairston will be entering his fourth year in the NBA. He was drafted 26th overall by the Miami Heat out of the University of North Carolina and was then traded to the Charlotte Hornets. During his rookie year, he averaged 5.6 PPG and 2.0 RPG. He would spend the 2015-2016 season in Memphis and also back in Charlotte. He was able to find some sort of small rhythm in Memphis, averaging 6.9 PPG. In his second stint with the Hornets, he started in 43 of the 48 games that he was apart of the team.
It looks as if Hairston mainly needs to find some sort of stability in the NBA. Starting a career as a journeyman can be very difficult for a player from a mental standpoint. Luckily for Hairston, he has shown flashes of his ability to be a productive NBA player. One of his biggest weaknesses is his three-point shooting. For his short career so far, he has shot a mere 29.5% from three-point land. And if a forward is going to want consistent minutes with the Rockets, perimeter shooting needs to be one of their strengths. He is still very young, so there is time for him to develop that shot.
It will be interesting to see what the Rockets decide to do with Hairston. Even if he doesn’t make the roster right now, he can still develop in the D-League and be called up when his services are needed.
