NBA Free Agency rolls along and, now that the bigger names are almost completely off the board, teams are looking to filling out their rosters with role players. Per Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical, the Rockets have agreed to sign veteran Center Nene to a one-year deal worth $2.9 million.

Nene, at 34 years old, is a fifteen-year veteran of the NBA, as well as an experienced international player with Brazil’s national team. Injuries have plagued Nene’s NBA career in recent years, but a healthy Nene is a welcome addition to Mike D’Antoni’s offense. He’s a very good passer at the center position and can add some of the rim protection the Rockets sorely need. In addition, Nene can be an excellent mentor to young Clint Capela, who figures to be the starting Center for the Rockets next season.
Considering the market that this summer’s free agency created, agreeing to sign Nene for a mere $2.9 million is great value. It’s a one-year deal, which is beneficial to the Rockets as they look to keep salary cap flexibility for the summer of 2017.
The Rockets ‘bigs’ now include Nene, Ryan Anderson, Clint Capela, Michael Beasley, Sam Dekker, rookie Chinanu Onuaku, and, potentially, Donatas Motiejunas. It’ll be interesting to see how the Rockets handle the roster spots for next season – a deal could be made soon to make room.
