On Monday, Sean Deveney of the Sporting News wrote about the possible return of now Jeff Van Gundy to the organization and Daryl Morey's job security. In that story, Deveney reported that the Rockets will very much be in the market for high-level free agents.
More specifically, Deveney mentioned that the Rockets had their sights set on all-star center Al Horford and New Orleans forward Ryan Anderson as targets in the offseason. He goes on to state that Houston is looking for a 'versatile forward' who can shoot the ball well enough to spread the floor on offense.
Ryan Anderson, setting aside concerns for his less than stellar defensive tools, certainly more than fits the bill. Simply put, the basketball prospect of running hundreds of spread pick-n-rolls with James Harden and Al Horford and having shooters like Ryan Anderson, Patrick Beverley, and Trevor Ariza on the perimeter to spread the floor out is devastatingly tantalizing. However, obtaining such high caliber talent after the season Houston just had, is going to be difficult considering there are going to be several suitors for the two (namely Horford) with the cap explosion this summer.
Deveney also went on to say he expects the Rockets will also try their hand at the sign-and-trade market for stars like Blake Griffin, Jimmy Butler, and Carmelo Anthony 'should they become available. This isn't unique for GM Daryl Morey as he's constantly looking for new ways to retool/upgrade the roster while simultaneously looking to make home run signings like he did with James Harden in 2012 and Dwight Howard in 2013.
To his credit, he's always managed to get a seat at the table with top-flight free agents every year like Chris Bosh, Lamarcus Aldridge, Carmelo Anthony, and possibly Al Horford and Kevin Durant this summer. While not always successful, there's something to be said for the aggressiveness to which Morey attacks each offseason with.
